FEP既具有与聚四氟乙烯相似的特性，又具有热塑性塑料的良好加工性能。因而它弥补了聚四氟乙烯加工困难的不足,使其成为代替聚四氟乙烯的材料。

FEP具有优良的耐热性、低摩檫性、不粘性和润滑性、耐化学腐蚀性、热稳定性和电绝缘性，FEP广泛应用于电气、电子、化工、航空、机械等工业部门及火箭、导弹、宇航等尖端科学技术和国防工业等部门。

FEP薄膜用作电容器、隔膜、化工设备的密封，在印刷工业中制印刷板、软电缆。薄膜可以焊接，可真空加工成型，可涂金属，表面无须活化，在加热和压力下可与金属和玻璃布粘结。

FEP薄膜具有特别高的耐气体渗透性，因此被用作气体分析仪的敏感元件与被分析气体隔离的隔膜。
